It would be nice if networkmanager / modemmanager were made optional again for this, I've been wanting to switch a desktop back to cinnamon for some time (since gnome 3.6 was removed from portage), but I do not want networkmanager on that system.

Like kisak42, I'd also like to use cinnamon but only when it's possible not to have networkmanager nor modemmanager installed. Is there a reason why they are not optional in the ebuild?

Second this. I submitted working patches for cinnamon-control-center-2.2.11. Grabbed from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cinnamon-control-center/2.2.11-4 (found in https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/cinnamon-control-center_2.2.11-4.debian.tar.xz ) NOTE: with uninstalled nm-applet the cinnamon-session fails to load. It needs a dummy /usr/share/applications/nm-applet.desktop file, so PLEASE SEE https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=529814. Maybe there are other workarounds for cinnamon-session.

Per some linuxmint dev comments on IRC, labor_ratte, please open pull requests against upstream to make networkmanager optional.
