Right now, we have this awesome idea that items in gentoo-news git are in:

  yyyy/yyyy-mm-dd....

while in rsync they are at

  metadata/news/yyyy-mm-dd

so no yyyy subdirectory. Long story short, it is a pointless PITA. I would like to use subtree merging for distributing news items in git user-syncing tree but this makes it impossible.

I think we should simply drop yyyy/ prefix from gentoo-news.git. It doesn't have that much benefit, and consistency is more important than that. Of course, an alternative is to use yyyy/ in rsync but that would break compatibility with existing tools.

Ah, and of course there's always the alternative of merging news items into gx86.

This requires updating GLEP 42. Reassigning and CCing GLEP authors.

How about moving GLEP 42 into PMS, and obsoleteing the GLEP?

Sounds like a lot of work for little benefit. Updating the GLEP to drop the yyyy subdirs should be comparatively easy.

from gentoo-news.git); consensus was to go ahead with it. No formal vote was taken.
