Description Philip P. 2014-09-21 00:30:38 UTC
I am using kde-base/kdebase-meta with my custom display-manager, and therefore I have set the use flag "-display-manager" (since this is for kdm I guess) and try to remove kdm-

However this setting has no effect at all and kdm still gets pulled in:

  kde-base/kdm-4.11.12 pulled in by:
    kde-base/ksmserver-4.11.12 requires >=kde-base/kdm-4.11.12:4[-aqua]

and

  kde-base/ksmserver-4.11.12 pulled in by:
    kde-base/kdebase-meta-4.14.1 requires >=kde-base/ksmserver-4.11:4[-aqua]
    kde-base/kdebase-startkde-4.11.12 requires >=kde-base/ksmserver-4.11.12:4[-aqua]
    kde-base/krunner-4.11.12 requires >=kde-base/ksmserver-4.11.12:4[-aqua]

As you see it gets pulled in by ksmserver.

1) Please post your `emerge --info' output in a comment.
2) Please attach the entire output of the failing(?) emerge call.
Comment 2 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-09-21 09:11:34 UTC
3) Which display manager do you have installed?

2)
Emerge does not actually fail, the problem is that eventhough I have set "-diplay-manager", KDEs kdm gets pulled in. So it appears that "-display-manager" doesn't have any effect on anything.

3)
I have SLiM and SDDM installed and they work. Since I do not use kdm I would like to remove it though.
Just curious, why does my alternative display even matter in this bug report?
Comment 4 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-09-23 09:38:34 UTC
You should be able to set USE=minimal on kde-base/kdebase-meta and not pull in kde-base/ksmserver which in turn would pull in kde-base/kdm. Or simply don't install kde-base/kdebase-meta at all but cherry-pick the packages you want.
Comment 5 Philip P. 2014-09-23 10:47:51 UTC
Mmh so to clarify: The "display-manager" setting is only of use when applied in conjunction with "minimal"?

Or does "display-manager" doesn't do anything at all, but "minimal" is enough?
Comment 6 Michael Palimaka (kensington) gentoo-dev 2014-09-23 13:26:24 UTC
The display-manager USE flag turned out to basically do nothing because libraries installed by KDM are required by ksmserver - see bug #520236.
Comment 7 Philip P. 2014-09-23 13:42:14 UTC
Yes, thats basically what I said in this bugreport.

Thanks for the link however; marking this as duplicate.
