This version of layman has been working ok for that past month, only recently this bug has appeared.

Can you please try layman-9999.  I've been looking over the code and don't see where that error could occur.  I think it was fixed already.  The code I think is ready for another release...need to check if we have another tiny fix to implement.

There is another error on layman-9999.

I have this fixed in git commit: 686f2bd67472d7499128140f0f0c0ce882c93891

Thank you for trying layman-9999.  If you re-emerge 9999 it will be fixed for you.
