ok, here's the story: =)

Cups got automatically installed on my server, when installing samba. So far so
good. But then I always got the "Unable to convert...." messages. I searched the
forums and found the suggestion to update ghostscript, but ghostscript wasn't
even installed on my server!! After emerging ghostscript, unmerging cups and
re-emerging cups everything works fine using the same config as before.
Therefore I suggest putting ghostscript in the dependencies of cups.
