Description Gregg Casillo 2004-05-23 03:04:13 UTC
I'm building a new system from a stage 1 install. I have successfully bootstrapped, and I am two packages away from competing an "emerge system." Unfortunately, I can't get openssh to install. Its configure script brakes at "checking if pty correctly handles controlling tty..." I found these two threads in the forums:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=158321
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=163091

Two solutions offered in these threads. First, try "chmod 666 /dev/ptmx." That did nothing. Finally, one guy said that the regular gentoo (w/ framebuffer) kernel worked for him and that he originally tried the gentoo-nofb (w/o framebuffer) kernel. I.e. the gentoo kernel worked; the gentoo-nofb did not.

I'm using gentoo-nofb at the moment. I have no choice at the moment but to reboot and give "gentoo" a go to see what happens. Sigh. 2004.1 continues to punish me.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot 2004.1 liveCD with gentoo-nofb.
2. Proceed through emerge system.
3. Openssh bitches about openpty in its configure script and brakes.

The "gentoo" kernel worked; openssh could then be installed. Hope this is fixed in 2004.2 for us crusty, old school consolers.

I was wrong. I put the wrong entries in my /etc/fstab. LVM2 and udev will work, and I am an idiot. Now confirmed for all eternity by this bug report.

No problem, man... it happens

Linux, i686... I'm having this problem again on a 2004.2 stage 2 build. I'm using a USB keyboard, and have repeatedly disconnected and reconnected the keyboard, which may be the cause. Booted off the LiveCD (universal) with gentoo kernel.

The following seems to have the most information:

Ah-ha! After testing, the pty hang issue is related to the keyboard disconnect. In fact, when the keyboard is disconnected, the kernel groks: uhci.c: d000: host controller halted. very bad.

I tried chmod 666 /dev/ptmx from http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=1057736#1057736 and I also emerged an unstable verstion of openssh (used that .keywords thingy/file to unmask it) before an emerge system and it worked fine ( http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=951280#951280 ) and I am pretty sure my keyboard is fine, no disconnects. it also locked up my whole system, could not even do a 'top'
