I installed Blender (media-gfx/blender-2.70a-r3). It starts OK. I'm trying to follow a very simple tutorial. I chose the Compositing Screen layout, checked Use Nodes, clicked on the Compositing node tree icon, and added an input image node (Add Input Image). So far so good. A little box with an orange outline appears, that says "Image" at the top and has a dropdown box at the bottom to select and open an image. Upon using the dropdown box to open an image, all the writing and contents of the little box with the orange outline disappears. There's no image visible. The box is completely empty. Only the outline and the dots along the right edge remain. Here's a screenshot: http://ninedegreesbelow.com/bug-reports/blender2.png Upon trying to move the image node around, other nodes disappear and reappear. The person who is tutoring me in using Blender says my installation is somehow faulty. I downloaded the precompiled Blender for 64-bit Linux. It also starts and also exhibits the same disappearing nodes and empty node/box after using the dropdown box to open an image.

Tell that your tutor and file a bug upstream. I have no idea what I can do on ebuild level about it.
After installing the proprietary nvidia driver, Blender is working. So the problem seems to have been that I was using nouveau.
that should be enough to make fun of yout tutor, please report back with the results
