Very good, except that I don't have a line that defines the PORTAGE_TMPDIR in my /etc/make.conf.

Really.  How about DISTCC_DIR in make.conf? If you do have it please comment it out or delete it.

I have that, as the distcc guide told me to put it in there.. I now assume that it's okay to remove the line from my /etc/make.conf and mark this bug fixed. It would be nice if the guide (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/distcc.xml) was updated anyway. =)
