Now emerge --sync just updates portage tree. Check on existance unread news items is performed at the begin of system update process. So, I need either to interrupt dependency check, or interrupt emerge process after dependecy count (I use --ask option as default). It whould be fine if portage will check news (and display remind if necessary) at sync post-process phase, without ordinar emerge execute. For now I usually use emerge --sync to sync tree, but I also remember about emerge-webrsync.
