Description Piergiorgio Beruto 2014-06-02 18:50:42 UTC
After updating my system and rebooting, the boot process hang at random points.
I've tried enabling interactive startup (openrc) to perform selective booting.
Selecting "drop to a shell" I tried running a few commands by hand and noticed that a lot of command would hang. Using strace I found that all programs hang on "sendto(/dev/log, ...)", so I tried disabling syslog-ng and the system works OK (with the exception of the logger of course).

emerge --update --deep --newuse --with-bdeps=y world has nothing to do.
perl-cleaner --all has nothing to do
python-updater has nothing to do
revdep-rebuild has nothing to do

I've tried to emerge --oneshot syslog-ng but nothing changed, as soon as I run "/etc/init.d/syslog-ng start" the system hang after a short while (I bet it's the time you need to fill the /dev/log socket with syslog-ng which is probably freezed somewhere).

I would do some more debugging but I'm unsure where to go from here.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
unknown (system update?)
Actual Results:
system hang at boot

Expected Results:
working system

It might be useful to attach your syslog-ng.conf here, and perhaps look at dmesg output for clues.
Comment 2 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-03 04:29:51 UTC
reopen with the config file and the output from "emerge --info syslog-ng"
Comment 3 Piergiorgio Beruto 2014-06-03 19:42:00 UTC
dmesg shows nothing useful (last messages from loaded drivers with everything OK)

Comment 4 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-03 19:59:26 UTC
Your config doesn't process /dev/log at all. You'd need something like:

source src { unix-stream("/dev/log"); };
Comment 5 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-03 20:00:19 UTC
But maybe in your case the system() driver is failing its "automatic detection".
Comment 6 Piergiorgio Beruto 2014-06-03 20:24:35 UTC
(In reply to Jeroen Roovers from comment #5)
> But maybe in your case the system() driver is failing its "automatic
> detection".

Well, I'm no syslog expert, however I thought the /dev/log unix socket is created by syslog itself? If I don't start syslog-ng I can't find /dev/log listed in the /dev directory.

lsof /dev/log
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
syslog-ng 8160 root 8u unix 0xffff880070134340 0t0 265496 /dev/log

Furthermore I don't understand what you mean by system() auto detection.
Maybe I could use a little advice in how to make further debugging?

Please, note that I didn't edited the syslog-ng config file, I'm using the gentoo default when I've installed the system for the first time.

Thank you.
Comment 7 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-04 16:42:39 UTC
Can you post the output of stat /dev/log please?
Comment 8 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-07 03:54:59 UTC
Also, what filesystem is /dev on? Worth trying with syslog-ng 3.4.8 and 3.5.4.1 too to see if the issue is the same.
Comment 9 Piergiorgio Beruto 2014-06-07 14:18:29 UTC
sorry for the late reaply,
it seems that putting rc_need="net.eth0" inside /etc/conf.d/syslog-ng fixed the problem, however, I really don't understand why, I'm not using network logging.
Comment 10 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-13 16:54:46 UTC
This appears to be some issue specific to your setup. Since you have it working I'm going to mark this WORKSFORME since I'm not able to tell what's going on there and things are working for me. If you're able to figure out what the root cause is, please reopen.
