systemd uses the fsck.* tools in /sbin to fsck the partitions at boot, however it cannot fsck the EFI System Partition (ESP) given that the dosfstools ebuild does not install fsck.vfat into /sbin, but rather /usr/sbin. This results in the following two messages being logged during boot up: systemd-efi-boot-generator[1411]: Checking was requested for /dev/disk/by-partuuid/83d0599c-fa58-4c59-b57b-d32e93c202bf, but /sbin/fsck.vfat cannot be used: No such file or directory systemd-fstab-generator[1416]: Checking was requested for /dev/sda1, but /sbin/fsck.vfat cannot be used: No such file or directory Both are referring to the same partition. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot up in UEFI mode, with the ESP set to be fscked according to /etc/fstab. Actual Results: The ESP is not fscked by systemd. Expected Results: The ESP is fscked by systemd. On line 21 of the sys-fs/dosfstools-3.0.26 ebuild, sed seems to be setting the prefix as /usr. emerge --info: Portage 2.2.10 (default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/kde/systemd, gcc-4.8.2, glibc-2.19, I didn't realize util-linux had been changed to search additional directories. From util-linux-2.22.2.ebuild: --enable-fs-paths-extra=/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin

Created attachment 374564 [details, diff] Search PATH for fsck.type Can you give this patch a try? Just drop it in /etc/portage/patches/sys-apps/systemd/ .
