With gcompris-13.11 audio is completely corrupt. The previous version worked fine. pulseaudio is terrible. try without that.

try pulseaudio --kill first and see if that makes a difference. You're pretty much on your own as far as I'm concerned with pulseaudio though since there's no way I run that on any of my machines.

Killing pulseaudio was not sufficient, it was spawned again when I started gcompris. I rebuild media-plugins/alsa-plugins with -pulseaudio and now gcompris audio is OK. The bug can be closed for me. thanks again, raffaele
