Try either installing text web browser(lynx/w3m/links) or use option --with-fop

There is a dependency in the ebuild for this:

|| ( www-client/links www-client/lynx virtual/w3m )

I'm using www-client/links 2.8'ish. What about you?

Sorry for the useless noise, I need to check my setup better. I had www-client/lynx in /etc/portage/profile/package.provided (and I even don't know anymore why I put it there)...
