I did some tests with files from /usr/share/doc/cjk-latex-4.5.2/examples Big5.tex.gz - gives lots of errors, when completed doesn't show any chinese characters Big5vert.tex.gz - gives lots of errors, when completed doesn't show any chinese characters CEF_test.tex.gz - syntax errors in tex source, xdvi shows tex commands CJKbabel.tex.gz - tex -> dvi conversion works fine, xdvi seems to display fine - WORKS! GB.tex.gz - lot's of errors... JIS.tex.gz - lot's of errors... KS.tex.gz - lot's of errors SJIS.tex.gz - lot's errors UTF8.tex.gz - lot's of errors... muletest.tex.gz - seemed to work fine py_test.tex.gz - Worked fine... rubytest.tex.gz - seemed to work fine thai.tex.gz - tex to dvi conversion worked fine, but none of the thai characters were displayed with xdvi Basically it's all because of missing fonts.. /usr/share/doc/cjk-latex-4.5.2/examples/README.gz IMHO, they should be included with cjk-latex ebuild, or in separate one.

One guess how to fix this would be installing this package: http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/cjk-fonts.html
cjk-fonts is actually installed within cjk-latex ebuilds. The fact is it is badly configured and is not usable. (well, I committed it though ...) I'll work on this issue shortly. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 40354 ***
I think that this bug, "Bug #40354", and "Bug #23167" have relations.
