Description Peter Stuge 2013-08-16 21:21:36 UTC
This was reliably reproducable for me. When building gdk-pixbuf something needs to (re)link against libgdk_pixbuf-2.0, but with MAKEOPTS=-j7 the relinking seems to start before the library itself has been built.

I'm afraid I don't know if this is a bug in libtool, autoconf, automake or if it is a broken/missing dependency in libgdk_pixbuf-2.0 upstream Makefile.am...

Setting MAKEOPTS=-j1 allows gdk-pixbuf-2.28.2 to build right away.

It's not so easy for me to get either, or I would have already.

I looked into the state after the failed build and the library has not been built yet when the relinking of another lib in the package is attempted.

Thanks for making me think about that one more time. I got an idea for how to get them. :)

If you are able to reproduce this parallel install problem, please report to upstream attaching a build.log -> bugzilla.gnome.org
Comment 6 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-09-01 14:01:11 UTC
I just had this problem in a perfectly reliable way by removing gdk-pixbuf first :/

I confirm that MAKEOPTS="-j1" emerge =x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf-2.26.4 also results in a successful compile on my amd64 hardened system, whereas "-j5" does not.
Comment 9 James Shaw (Simba7) 2013-09-24 07:46:45 UTC
Using MAKEOPTS="-j1" works with ~x86.

I placed x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf in package.env and make a conf file (makeoptsj1.conf) so it will not effect other packages.
Comment 10 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2013-09-25 06:33:45 UTC
Did anyone reported the problem to upstream (providing them a full build.log)? Thanks
Comment 11 Andy Johnson 2013-09-25 12:18:03 UTC
also ran into this problem... here are links to my build info, I don't know where to send upstream exactly...

This overrides MAKEOPTS.

$ VAR="a"
$ f() { declare -p VAR; }
$ f
declare -- VAR="a"
$ VAR+="b" f
declare -x VAR="b"
$ VAR="${VAR}b" f
declare -x VAR="ab"
Comment 15 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2013-11-15 20:52:44 UTC
Yeah, looks like it is not appending it, but I don't know why, there are a lot of MAKEOPTS+=" -j1" in the tree and I think "+=" worked like VAR="${VAR} ..." last time I used it :S

Still occurs with 2.26.5 (at least on ARM, I don't recall having this issue on my amd64 box)

I was able to reproduce on amd64 when I added the -j1, but I needed to unmerge gdk-pixbuf before
Comment 19 Anton Gubarkov 2016-11-29 08:09:34 UTC
Still there on 2.36.0 (on amd64)

Comment 23 Mart Raudsepp gentoo-dev 2017-03-29 12:38:31 UTC
This seems to have nothing to do with the bug here, as we have

multilib_src_install() {
        # Parallel install fails when no gdk-pixbuf is already installed, bug #481372
        MAKEOPTS="${MAKEOPTS} -j1" gnome2_src_install
}

for this bug as a workaround still.

you want to file a new bug with the touch || die maybe; this isn't the same bug.
Comment 24 Matt Turner gentoo-dev 2019-10-28 00:29:26 UTC
Presumably no longer a problem with Meson. WONTFIX, to follow with upstream.
