The guide recommends a separate /usr in the example, but does not indicate that an initramfs (or other mechanism) will be required in this case. There are already instructions for preparing an initramfs, so only minor fixes should be needed to indicate that it is required in this configuration, and ensure the commands given will in fact mount it automatically. Alternatively, just drop the recommendation to set up a separate /usr. However, to do that a much larger root partition would be required, and if that is on LVM an initramfs will still be required.
