There's no icon in the system settings, but the process list is full of nepomuk + virtuoso - processes, which slows down my machine.
If the functionality is present, then the KDE runtime will use it. A USE flag isn't going to remove the runtime features. Use emerge --depclean.

Erm, after reading this http://blogs.gentoo.org/johu/2013/06/13/disabling-semantic-desktop-at-runtime-2/ I think the right solution is to install a widget into the tray bar - but theree is no widget :-(
Apparently kde-base/nepomuk-core and kde-base/nepomuk-widgets is installed but kde-base/nepomuk did not get pulled in causing the widget to be missing.
