Description Jeremy Murphy 2013-06-25 00:16:47 UTC
Creating the boot disc happens without error, but upon booting the newly created disc, errors about missing COM32 modules appear.

After many failed attempts to use unetbootin, I finally tried downgrading syslinux to 4.06 and suddenly everything magically worked!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge >=sys-boot/syslinux-5.00
2. Use unetbootin to create a USB boot disc.
3. Boot it.

Actual Results:
Missing COM32 modules.

Expected Results:
Boot menu.

Can you name the missing COM32 modules? Can you verify with
# LD_LIBRARY_PATH="." ldd menu.c32
or similar command that the modules needed for dynamic linking are installed?
Comment 2 Jeremy Murphy 2013-06-25 00:35:41 UTC
Yeah, sorry, I should have named them in the first place: libutil.c32 and menu.c32.

When I run that ldd test, does it matter a) which version of syslinux I have installed and b) what my current working directory is?
Comment 3 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-06-25 13:20:40 UTC
Does 584 have the same problem? Otherwise you'd be mixing the stable and unstable branch here.
Comment 4 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2013-06-25 13:24:46 UTC
Run it from the directory where the .c32 files were copied to.
Only >=syslinux-5 uses the ELF binary format, so ldd will not work on earlier versions.
Comment 5 Nikoli 2013-09-07 09:13:41 UTC
Same problem here: sys-boot/unetbootin-585 does not work with sys-boot/syslinux-5.10, but with sys-boot/syslinux-4.07 it works fine.
Comment 6 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-09-07 14:29:32 UTC
I have changed the dependency to <sys-boot/syslinux-5 but obviously that does not fix the issue...
Comment 7 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2013-09-08 11:51:49 UTC
I'm still waiting for a proper reply on my question in comment #1.
Comment 8 RB 2014-09-09 14:08:46 UTC
Not wanting to backgrade sys-boot/syslinux for various reasons, I tested this out.

Upon boot syslinux complained about a missing "vesamenu.c32" but I was able to mess around with the boot options (pentoo0 using tab-complete) and it booted fine. It appears that unetbootin is missing installing some modules for newer versions of syslinux, but not unmitigably so.

I found this patch at openmamba's page: http://www.openmamba.org/showfile.html?file=/pub/openmamba/milestone3/patches/unetbootin-584-syslinux-5.patch Seems to install libtuil.c32 which is the only dependence for menu.c32

Oddly enough that seems to have been already applied in some form in unetbootin-608. Let's test that, shall we?
Comment 11 Francisco Blas Izquierdo Riera (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-10-31 01:05:54 UTC
Yup, I'll test it next time I have to prepare a pendrive, hopefully by next week.
Comment 12 Francisco Blas Izquierdo Riera (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-11-01 00:58:05 UTC
Jer I have tested with 608 and current stable syslinux to burn a xubuntu .iso So according to my tests you can remove the <sys-boot/syslinux-5.00 dependency.
Comment 13 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-11-02 14:14:53 UTC
Thanks for testing.

Fixed.
Comment 14 UlvHare 2014-12-21 13:46:55 UTC
You are get ahead of yourself :-(
unetbootin-608 + syslinux-5.10 result in error "failed to load com32 file menu.c32" when attempt to load from usb-stick (Calculate Linux).
unetbootin-608 + syslinux-4.07 work properly in the same conditions.

Is there a menu.c32 file at all on the pendrive? Does /usr/share/syslinux/menu.c32 exist on your system? Is the stick formatted with fat32?

I tested with xubuntu and Gentoo (bboth x86 and amd64) and all of them worked as they should.
Comment 16 Francisco Blas Izquierdo Riera (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-12-21 16:58:23 UTC
It would also be helpful to know which CD are you using and with which steps.
