There is patch that extends openssh tunelling ability for forwarding unix sockets on http://25thandclement.com/~william/projects/streamlocal.html It would be quite handy to have use-flag for enabling this patch.

That patch dates back to 2006. Why haven't the authors pushed it upstream?

sorry, but we have enough (big) patches in openssh as it is. we aren't looking at juggling even more. the current diffstat shows: 18 files changed, 1394 insertions(+), 286 deletions(-) i'll add epatch_user to the ebuild though so you can drop it on your own system into /etc/portage/patches/ ...
