I'm not sure which "emerge -uD world" update to my system last week caused this, but over the last 4-5 days when I've reboot my system now, I get this sequence of events:

 * Checking all filesystems...

 * Activating (possibly) more swap
 * Caching service dependencies

This seems to result in a lot of applications (syslog-ng, postfix, amavisd, apache2) not starting correctly.  Manually starting them seems to work (that's my workaround for now), but something appears to be broken with depcache.
