I upgraded dev-libs/mpc (0.8.2 to 1.0.1) on this machine, was prompted about old library versions, so I manually ran "revdep-rebuild --library '/usr/lib64/libmpc.so.2' -- -av" which said "There are no dynamic links to /usr/lib64/libmpc.so.2... All done." So I deleted libmpc.so.2 and then I found that gcc stopped working when trying to compile anything: "/usr/libexec/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.5.4/cc1: error while loading shared libraries: libmpc.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" I ran "revdep-rebuild -i -- -av" to check again, and it said "Dynamic linking on your system is consistent... All done." Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Upgrade dev-libs/mpc from 0.8.2 to 1.0.1 (having gcc previously compiled with the old mpc) 2. revdep-rebuild --library '/usr/lib64/libmpc.so.2' Actual Results: There are no dynamic links to /usr/lib64/libmpc.so.2... You should have used `revdep-rebuild --library libmpc.so.2` without the path. Unfortunately a known bug wrt bug 357225 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 357225 ***

Also, what about revdep-rebuild with no library argument? Why does it not detect the broken gcc after deleting libmpc.so.2?
I saw your note in the portage preserved-rebuild bug and have tried duplicating your issue several times. Unfortunately, it works for me.
