Per this forum thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-956430.html I followed the documentation to install Gentoo amd64 and install X without difficulty. Profile choice is mentioned in general terms in the install handbook, but no basis for choice is mentioned there, and I accepted the default profile. As per the above thread, when I followed the directions inthe Xfce guide, I received several blocking errors. When I switched to the 'Desktop' profile, all the blocking errors were resolved automatically. The Xfce guide should stress (for newbies, after all, like me) that the system Profile should be set to 'Desktop'. I almost gave up trying when I was faced with those blocks, and I suspect other beginners will too without inquiring about a solution.
nope, not a problem with the guide. it is perfectly installable with just the default profile -- i only use the basic amd64 profile. the "desktop" profile is full of gnome and kde bloat, so it will not be recommended in the guide.
