x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-304.84 is causing anything having to do with framebuffer to fail after X starts and it is loaded. This is on my ~amd64 laptop. For example, as my machine starts my framebuffer splash works beautifully and I can 'Alt+F2' to switch to 'verbose' mode to track start-up, however, after X starts and the Nvidia driver loads it's impossible to switch to a vt console using Ctrl+Alt+Fn, logout of my display manager (KDM) into a vt console, and both the logout splash and tuxonice fail to display anything all. Once X starts and the nvidia driver loads all of the above actions result in a black blank screen with no graphics and no character display at all - none, nothing. The only solution I've found was to go back to x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-304.64 and the patches from this thread, bug 447566 however this also requires downgrading to < x11-base/xorg-server-1.14 because the previous nvidia-driver is incompatible with xorg-server-1.14. I can confirm I get blank VTs when I switch from an X server. Does it help to disable all FB support in your kernel? Also, I get this in dmesg: NVRM: Your system is not currently configured to drive a VGA console NVRM: on the primary VGA device. The NVIDIA Linux graphics driver NVRM: requires the use of a text-mode VGA console. Use of other console NVRM: drivers including, but not limited to, vesafb, may result in NVRM: corruption and stability problems, and is not supported. Do you?

Jeroen, that dmesg output has been normal for as long as I can remember. Nvidia has never officially supported any kernel video driver except for the basic vga text-mode, however, both the vesafb and uvesafb have worked without problems in the past. I don't know what has changed with this driver but I will continue to investigate for a solution, maybe one of the other distros has answers.
I can confirm this on my 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G71 [GeForce 7950 GT] (rev a1) !
Even with only the VGA Text Console (so no framebuffer drivers in use) I get corrupted vts. Maybe the Nvidia forums reports similar experiences?

I can confirm this bug on 00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C61 [GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a] (rev a2) using nvidia-drivers-304.84 with gentoo-sources-3.7.10. I just have a blank black screen and a blinking cursor. I tested with uvesafb as framebuffer and without it. In both cases the vt is unusable after starting kdm. After upgrading to nvidia-drivers-304.88 the problem is solved for me. I can't seem to confirm the consoles return after the driver upgrade, but then I haven't rebooted the system yet, so maybe I get better results after that. Anyone else?
After a reboot, I can get back from X to a console. Assume this is fixed for everybody.
