Please attach the output of "emerge --info pango fontconfig libXft", explain what version of what desktop environment you are using, what default font you are using in gtk applications (dejavu, cantarell, something else?), whether you are using a non-English locale, etc. If the application where you are seeing this problem generates error messages when you run it from the terminal, please attach them. A screenshot would also help.
