I prefer to use a separate /usr partition. On one of my PCs I have several HDDs and use UUIDs in /etc/fstab. As recommended in news (2013-01-23 Upgrading udev from 171 (or older) to 197) I've changed boot procedure adding initramfs as described in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/initramfs-guide.xml And find the error message, describing failure of early mount /usr partition. Temporary switch back to direct device naming in /etc/fstab showed success early mount of /usr. Initramfs is built with command: # genkernel --install --disklabel --real-root=/dev/sda1 --no-ramdisk-modules initramfs Earlier, while updating to sys-fs/udev-197, I've find, that availability of devices under uuid symlinks now requires udev daemon started. Is this still an issue for you? I believe you should be using UUID= in fstab rather than /dev/disk/by-uuid/ since udev is known to not be available in genkernel at this time
