An 'emerge -s db' shows 'sys-libs/db' has the latest version installed, 3.2.9. However, any attempt to build the latest MySQL fails, because it doesn't like that version -- it wants either an older version or 3.2.9a. I don't suppose this is because there is a 3.2.9a available, with no ebuild? Probably this is a problem with detecting the version correctly, and not with the wrong version. A similar problem arose on a different, less-frequently updated machine. It is a bit more severe, so I'll put it in its own bug report when I've got access to it, to check version numbers. Any attempt to update automake fails because it thinks my version of autoconf is too old. I have the latest autoconf installed, and it is recent enough, though a couple of older ones seem to be installed, too -- at least, their tarballs were downloaded as well. However, automake fails to rebuild because of a shared library, or a perl module, or something, being misplaced. I had problems with an upgraded portage once, so I downgraded, then upgraded again, and it worked. However, I can't be bothered to try this on every single package that doesn't work.
