MySQL has released 4.1 which is a LOT better than 4.0.18 as it for instance supports subqueries and derived (more here tableshttp://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Nutshell_4.1_features.html).

MySQL recommends MySQL 4.1 -- Alpha release for new development, and I think that it should be in the portage tree alonside 4.0.18.
