To Portage devs: Should the hints be QA warnings?

No. The hints are new in desktop-file-utils-0.21 and we already have a portage patch in git to ignore them:

http://git.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/?p=proj/portage.git;a=commit;h=ad24e372f5059dc1d6688e0fd01fb4fdb38f2908

The ebuild can set QA_DESKTOP_FILE=".*" to suppress all desktop warnings with current stable portage.

This seems fixed in portage 2.1.11.31.

Really? The relevant commit is dated 28 October, while 2.1.11.31 was tagged on 26 October:

My mistake, I forgot I applied that patch to my installation.
Comment 5 Michael Palimaka (kensington) gentoo-dev 2012-11-27 15:53:19 UTC
These 'hint' messages are not validation failures, and will not be shown in the next version of portage.

If you disagree with the choice of categories, please file a bug upstream.
