Does a revdep-rebuild fix this?
Revdep-rebuild wants only to reermerge gnome-phone-manager and syncevolution: root@leopard:/usr/src(7)# revdep-rebuild * Configuring search environment for revdep-rebuild ... * All prepared. Starting rebuild emerge --complete-graph=y --oneshot app-mobilephone/gnome-phone-manager:0 app-pda/syncevolution:0 .......... and I reemerged already util-linux, which contains blkid. If I call blkid from the command line, I do not have any problem: root@leopard:/usr/src(8)# blkid /dev/sda1 /dev/sda1: UUID="246ca23e-b73e-ea78-cb20-1669f728008a" TYPE="linux_raid_member" root@leopard:/usr/src(9)# type blkid blkid is hashed (/sbin/blkid) root@leopard:/usr/src(10)# ll /sbin/blkid -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 112916 Nov 6 12:07 /sbin/blkid* root@leopard:/usr/src(11)# ldd /sbin/blkid linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007fff0755d000) libblkid.so.1 => /lib64/libblkid.so.1 (0x00007f18b739e000) libc.so.6 => /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x00007f18b6ff6000) libuuid.so.1 => /lib64/libuuid.so.1 (0x00007f18b6df1000) /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00007f18b75d2000)
Same issue here. I downgraded genkernel to genkernel-3.4.44.2 but the problem remains. The source is to be found in /usr/share/genkernel/gen_initramfs.sh in the copy_binaries function. This function calls the lddtree binary in order to check for binary sanity. Where ldd succeeds : $ ldd /sbin/blkid linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007fff8a588000) libblkid.so.1 => /lib64/libblkid.so.1 (0x00007fd708f82000) libc.so.6 => /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x00007fd708bdd000) libuuid.so.1 => /lib64/libuuid.so.1 (0x00007fd7089d8000) /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00007fd7091a9000) lddtree just fails : $ lddtree /sbin/blkid blkid => /sbin/blkid (interpreter => /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2) libblkid.so.1 => /lib64/libblkid.so.1 libuuid.so.1 => /lib64/libuuid.so.1 libc.so.6 => not found lddtree is part of the pax-utils package that has been updated on November the 5th, just the day genkernel got bumped.
And if I run "lddtree -x /sbin/blkid" in order to get debug traces, I can see that every successfully resolved dependency shows something similar to this : + pe=/lib64/libuuid.so.1 + [[ -e /lib64/libuuid.so.1 ]] ++ elf_specs /lib64/libuuid.so.1 ++ scanelf -BF '#F%a %M %D %I' /lib64/libuuid.so.1 + [[ EM_X86_64 ELFCLASS64 LE NONE == \E\M\_\X\8\6\_\6\4\ \E\L\F\C\L\A\S\S\6\4\ \L\E\ \N\O\N\E ]] + _find_elf=/lib64/libuuid.so.1 + return 0 expect libc.so.6 which shows this : + pe=/lib64/libc.so.6 + [[ -e /lib64/libc.so.6 ]] ++ elf_specs /lib64/libc.so.6 ++ scanelf -BF '#F%a %M %D %I' /lib64/libc.so.6 + [[ EM_X86_64 ELFCLASS64 LE LINUX == \E\M\_\X\8\6\_\6\4\ \E\L\F\C\L\A\S\S\6\4\ \L\E\ \N\O\N\E ]] + for path in '"$@"' + pe=/usr/lib64/libc.so.6 So basically the issue boils down to this difference : $ scanelf -BF '#F%a %M %D %I' /lib64/libc.so.6 EM_X86_64 ELFCLASS64 LE LINUX $ scanelf -BF '#F%a %M %D %I' /lib64/libuuid.so.1 EM_X86_64 ELFCLASS64 LE NONE
I downgraded pax-utils to 0.4 and now genkernel-3.4.45 works fine.

(In reply to comment #6) try to re-emerge glibc. i vaguely recall EI_OSABI changing at some point, but i'd have to dig things up to find out when/why.
(In reply to comment #11) regardless of that, i just have lddtree normalize LINUX to NONE now http://sources.gentoo.org/gentoo-projects/pax-utils/lddtree.sh?r1=1.13&r2=1.14
Hi Mike, thank you for looking at this. That's weird. Initially I had binutils-2.22-r1 and glibc-2.15-r3 installed. I tried the following with the same result : - bumping binutils to 2.23 et recompiling glibc - bumping glibc to 2.16 - bumping binutils to 2.23 and glibc to 2.16 - recompiled the system target I'm currently recompiling world (safety measure linked with the glibc-2.16 bump), I'm afraid it's not going to change anything. I've googled a bit about this osabi stuf, but found nothing really useful. Do you plan to add your patch against pax-utils-0.5 in the portage tree or wait for it to be included in 0.6 ?
Juergen, would you try running `env LC_ALL=C lddtree /sbin/blkid` and telling us what that says? Also, as a side note, the following commit switched to using the system blkid from one we compiled ourselves: http://git.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/?p=proj/genkernel.git;a=commit;f=gen_initramfs.sh;h=5153192ca2109768336dfa5f891ec6f73e29001a blkid is already provided by busybox, but it does not provide all of the information that the system blkid does. It is not clear to me that we actually need that information though. I have written a commit that switches to the busybox blkid and it works fine on my system, but I have not committed it to master: http://git.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/?p=proj/genkernel.git;a=commit;h=255b7ca420e889260e5a8303dda7372a0424186d I am not familiar with UUID-based mounting, so we will need comments from the other genkernel developers about that change.

After speaking with robbat2, it seems that busybox's blkid does not support as many filesystems as the util-linux blkid. We would need to patch busybox before we could switch to it.

(In reply to comment #19) > For me this issue is resolved with pax-utils-0.6 I seems fairly clear at this point that this is a regression in app-misc/pax-utils-0.5. I am reassigning to the pax-utils maintainers for resolution.
pax-utils-0.6 is already in the tree w/the fix. there's nothing left to do.
(In reply to comment #24) > pax-utils-0.6 is already in the tree w/the fix. there's nothing left to do. Oh yes it is! Reassign back to Genkernel maintainers and get one of them with commit-access to the portage tree to roll a new release since the git-tree already contains a fix.

That is a fix for genkernel to work with pax-utils-0.6 so that people does not hit this bug. So it can be stabilized at the same time as pax-utils-0.6,
i really have no idea what's going on here. afaik, pax-utils-0.6 has all necessary fixes. if that's not the case, re-add us and specifically outline things.
I have committed a blocker against app-misc/pax-utils-0.5. That should resolve this issue.
(In reply to comment #28) > I have committed a blocker against app-misc/pax-utils-0.5. That should > resolve this issue. So we're not going to release a new version of genkernel so that we might have something stable at the time pax-utils-0.6 goes stable? Or at least a -r1 with a patch fixing this issue (as it already exists in genkernel git)? Instead just force the ~arch users to downgrade yet another version?
