Description Brian Tarricone 2012-10-14 20:47:56 UTC
(First off, apologies in advance for the narrative-style report here. Not sure how to better get the information across in a more terse manner.)

I've been using the portage-built Chromium for quite some time now. A couple months ago when it updated from Chrome 22 to 23, it started noticeably crashing a lot. Extensions would crash on startup and need to be restarted (Adblock would just go into a crash loop), and tabs would crash often, seemingly randomly (major culprits seemed to be google.com, gmail.com, and facebook.com, though maybe that's just due to frequency of use). I didn't notice any similar behavior on MacOS on the same hardware, and assumed this was just overall poor test coverage on Linux on Google's part.

Today I tried to install the pre-compiled www-client/google-chrome binaries. (The ebuild is actually broken wrt to SRC_URI, but that's another bug.) I downloaded the .deb manually (version 24.0.1290.1), and manually unpacked in /opt/. With www-client/chromium *not* running, I symlinked ~/.config/chromium/ to ~/.config/google-chrome/ so I'd be using the same profile. Started up the precompiled version of Chrome, and now everything's fine. All extensions work, and no random tab crashes. (Oh, and I've also tried a fresh profile with the portage-compiled Chromium with the same crashy results.)

I'm not sure exactly what information I can provide to help track this down. Any pointers as to what I can do would be greatly appreciated.
