The benchmark tests fail. The john the ripper team knows that they fail. The actual cracking all works fine.

What should I do? I imagine this is a case for RESTRICT="test" but is it?
Comment 2 Nikoli 2012-10-06 21:15:37 UTC
Do only and exactly these 2 tests fail for all systems? Or it depends if system is hardened, has slow cpu, etc? May be it is better to disable only 2 failing tests instead of disabling all.

Actually if you build with cuda/opencl support the tests basically can't work at all unless users want to add portage to their video group (or some silly person isn't running userpriv).

It would seem that testing john at install time doesn't really make much sense.

The freshly built version of john is tested using all the support files (conf files and opencl/cuda files) from the previous version AND the tests don't work as user AND the tests are known to fail anyway.

I think the only way to fix this properly is to remove the feature. It's known not to work and that's as far as I think we need to go.

I will think on this a little longer, but I am pretty sure I'm not changing my mind.

Per comment 3 there is nothing else I can think about doing except to restrict test. If anyone wants to fix test so that it can actually test and have access to the proper version of the files I'm happy to work with you. Oh yeah, and upstream has to actually care that ./john --test fails...
