Since I've upgraded my kernel from 2.6 to 3.2*, I've no sound.
I've to unplug / re-plug my speakers to get the sound works.
I've tried different configurations without succes.

With or without CONFIG_SND_HDA_INPUT_JACK=y, I've the same problem.
Upgraded to 3.4.9, same problem
in alsamixer, all is OK, none is muted.
I use pulse audio.
Can you please describe your setup?
Which jack do you replug?
Do you use usb speakers (soundcard in the speaker) or
do you re-plug an headphone jack on passive speakers?
Can you please provide the usb id and brand name (lsusb from sys-apps/usbutils) if any usb involved?
I re-plug passive speakers jack.
USB speakers not involved.

So I guess the modules are loaded but the sound output isn't automatically switched on? Does it help to run alsamixer and manually enable/unmute headphone output?

you're right with headphone output.
By default, it was unmuted.
when mutting, front and master was muted too.
Unmutting all doesn't switch the sound on;
I've had to adjust all to get the sound on.
I'll try to reboot to tell if it still work or not.
So it would appear to be a matter of local configuration.
