x11-misc/transset-df have been masked because another software did an update. If I follow this logic, I would mask xine with every mplayer update, mask pulseaudio with every jack-audio-connection-kit update, and mask firefox with every konqueror update. x11-misc/transset-df and x11-apps/transset are 2 different pieces of software with different features. Also, even if they made a new transset version, they didn't change the features of this software. A comparaison of both show us than transset-df can do what transset can do, but that transset just caanot do most of the transset-df features. In conclusion, if you absolutly want to remove one of those software from portage, remove the one that have the less features, that is apps/transset. I also think that the best thing to do would be to keep both of them.
# emerge -a transset-df These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! !!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "transset-df" have been masked. !!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request: - x11-misc/transset-df-6::x-test (masked by: package.mask) /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask: # Samuli Suominen <ssuominen@gentoo.org> (25 Jun 2012) # Replaced by the new 1.0.0 release of x11-apps/transset. # Removal in 30 days. - x11-misc/transset-df-6::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
In fact, the transset-df features have been merged into transset. The problem is than the man page is not updated with the changes. As the new features are not documented into the man page, I didn't even try to run a transset-df command like "transset --help". http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7089756.html#7089756

This is about transset now, not transset-df.
I think all of this was fixed by https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/transset/commit/?id=fc4bf3cda6d14cac9272f8399bb6dc614c1ef956 which is in transset-1.0.1.
