Description lgringo 2012-05-10 14:32:00 UTC
Hi !

When using /etc/init.d/sysstat, the SADC_OPTIONS in /etc/sysstat is not used. So /var/log/sadd may not have good format.

The problem appears only when the init script have to create the file ...

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Stop sa (ps aux | grep sa and then kill the process if present)
2. Edit /etc/sysstat to set SADC_OPTIONS to "-S XDISK"
3. rm /var/log/sa/sadd (where dd is day of month (ie sa10 for example).
4. /etc/init.d/sysstat restart
5. Request disk partition statistics (sar -dp)
6. See the error message ...
7. Start sadc (just one stat is enough /usr/lib/sa/sa1 1 2 & )
8. Wait 2 sec.
9. Request disk partition statistics (sar -dp)
10. See the error message ... and cry. (see Actual results)
NB: In fact, the existing file format prevail on option passed to sadc, and as /etc/init.d/sysstat doesn't use "-S XDISK", the statistics aren't recorded, even if it's specified.

Normal behaviour :
1. Stop sa (ps aux | grep sa and then kill the process if present)
2. Edit /etc/sysstat to set SADC_OPTIONS to "-S XDISK"
3. rm /var/log/sa/sadd
4. Start sadc (just one stat is enough /usr/lib/sa/sa1 1 2 & )
5. Wait 2 sec.
6. Request disk partition statistics (sar -dp)
7. Be happy ... (see expected results)
Actual Results:
Activités demandées non enregistrées dans le fichier /var/log/sa/sa10

sysstat(5) says:
"This file is read by sa1(8) and sa2(8) shell scripts from the
   sysstat's set of tools."

Should we source /etc/sysstat, then, or use sa1 or sa2 in /etc/init.d/sysstat instead?

The only reason the init.d script is there is to write a "dummy startup record" - maybe it ought to be dropped altogether in favour of having a cron job do the work?

This is a possible patch

Yes, using sa1 is easier (sa1 has a --boot argument to do the trick).

Patch against /etc/init.d/sysstat using sa1 instead of sadc

This solution is easier than the previous one. Thanks Jeroen.

Thanks. Please make it a unified diff (diff -u) next time.

Fixed with an r1 revision bump.
