dev-tex/texlive-basic-2-11-r1 bails out with a general error description: 'failed to build format texmf/fmtutil/format.texlive-basic.cnf' By digging deeper, the build log reads (at approx. one third) : "fmtutil: running 'luatex -ini -jobname=dviluatex -progname=dviluatex dviluatex.ini' ..." immediately followed by: "PANIC: unprotected error in call to Lua API (zlib library version does not match - header 1.2.3, library 1.2.5)" Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.emerge -1 texlive-basic-2011 2. 3. Actual Results: as above Expected Results: flawless build revdeprebuild is no solution. Rebuilding luatex and zlib is no solution either.

you need to rebuild luatex after a zlib upgrade (revdep-rebuild wont help moreover) please try that rebuilding luatex and try again
Perhaps I emerged them in reverse order? But I remember having done so. In ultimate despair I unmerged ALL TeX-related packages. After having done that, your recipe worked well. Thank you!
