There are KNOWN issues with stripping the pthread lib in glibc, this will give
applikations like gdb problem to catch interupts from threads. 

I would like to see that gentoo does _not_ strip libpthread by default. this
would make life a lot easier.

Note: Portage 2.0.6+ will strip correctly in this regard.
