Description Lars Kotthoff 2012-01-09 21:42:08 UTC
Playing video through the xv extensions causes the X server to crash after some time (sometimes 2, sometimes 15 minutes). This only started happening after a recent update of X and related packages, but strangely reverting to the old versions of the packages does not fix the bug. I'm using the Intel i915 graphics driver (Thinkpad X300).

Specifically, I have reverted to
x11-base/xorg-server-1.10.4-r1
x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.10
x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.27 (I used to be on ~x86)

I did not install a new kernel after the update. Video output works fine using the x11 driver. I have found several bug reports on the internet that report a similar problem (i.e. X segfaulting with xv, but not with x11), but nobody is using the same hardware/drivers as I am, so I'm not sure if the problems are related.

I have only observed the bug when playing video fullscreen, but haven't tested playing non-fullscreen in depth.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start X.
2. Start playing a video fullscreen using xv.
Actual Results:
X crashes.

Expected Results:
X doesn't crash.

xvinfo output:

Please also report this upstream at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ (if no report already exists) and provide the link here.

For reporting upstream it would be best to give a stack trace using xorg-server-1.11. You might be asked to upgrade to kernel 3.2.

Besides, you could check if enabling sna for xf86-video-intel and/or running mplayer -vo gl makes any difference.
Comment 3 Lars Kotthoff 2012-01-10 17:32:20 UTC
Upstream bug at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44642

SNA is enabled (and was before), will try if disabling it makes a difference. mplayer -vo gl crashes the X server as well, reports something about the GPU being stuck in an infinite loop. In this case I have to reboot the machine, screen just goes blank and nothing I does brings it back.
Comment 4 Rémi Cardona (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-11-28 20:56:37 UTC
Are you still having troubles with the latest ~arch ebuild (2.20.14 as of today). If so, please update the upstream bug report.

Thanks
