Under "Adding custom options" it is suggested to add to the opts variable, which is deprecated and triggers an openrc warning:

Thanks for reporting. This has been fixed in CVS now. 

Too bad I had to read the hwclock init script to make sure I document it properly, couldn't immediately find a better resource :-(
