After some recent update, several days ago, I have the same problem. With kde 4.6.5 and now with kde 4.7.0. KDM starts but never shows desktop, just mouse pointer. top shows that plasma-desktops has 100% cpu usage. I "resolved" it by removing ~/.kde4/share/apps/plasma/plasmoids directory where I had had two similar plasmoids scripted in python. And if I restore this directory after login and try to add of these plasmoids, plasma-desktop hangs a eats cpu in the same way. BUT when I run same plasmoid with plasmoidviewer it works!
I tried this solution but it didn't work. But if I start a fresh sesion of KDE, whithout any .kde4 configuration, everything is fine. So it's my .kde4 which is enagaged. I'll try to clean it up
Yeah, KConfig is quite unreliable way to store user configuration - as it doesn't provide version information -> impossible to do reliable update of application config files because kconf_update does not know config file verson so cannot reliably apply any conversion rules There's nothing we can do here unfortunately...
I don't think it is about KConfig. It looks like that PyQt4, pykde4 or something similar is involved. Other plasmoids work fine. Do you have Grid-Layout enabled? Maybe it is related to this bug: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=278222 There seems to be a fix: https://projects.kde.org/projects/kde/kdeplasma-addons/repository/revisions/67b5c56e564f5052238bab38342a85e5f4af570b
Yes I had an GridLayout. But I delete all my plasma configuration now and I have an default plasma workspace and it works.
Fixed in 4.7.0-r1 and later.
It looks like it wasn't my bug, I don't have GridLayout. Will see if kdelibs-4.7.0-r1 will help.
