I searched the problem and I found this : On my KDE installation, the problem is from equery depends gawk * These packages depend on gawk: app-portage/gentoolkit-0.3.0.4 (sys-apps/gawk) dev-db/virtuoso-odbc-6.1.3 (<sys-apps/gawk-4.0.0) dev-db/virtuoso-server-6.1.3 (<sys-apps/gawk-4.0.0) I know that soprano has the virtuoso use flag.
Attach emerge --info output. Do you use ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~arch? Well.. stop doing that, because it's why you get this error.
I think alternatively you try with adding the following to make.conf: EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--with-bdeps n" Because when you pass '--deep', and '--with-bdeps y' is set, all build time package dependencies are pulled into dependency chain even when packages itself are not rebuilt. So adding '--with bdeps n' in theory should not pull '<sys-apps/gawk-4.0.0' from virtuoso (as it's in DEPEND there).

README file in archive "virtuoso-opensource-6.1.3.tar.gz" says clearly that the recommend gawk version for virtuoso is 3.1.1. Report upstream if you want to have gawk 4.0.0 support.
With gawk-4 we had some pretty spectacular failures ...
