Can someone either explain why this should ne a neccessary dependency for "gstreamer" (which, by the way, should rather be called "video" or something similar) or the maintainer remove it from the ebuild, because that's annoying to get a dozen packages pulled in which are actually not required.

I was merely trying to admit the possibility of my wrong-being when I said that, it was not really a question. Pidgin compiles fine without gconf and related plugins, I asked on the pidgin channel and got the answer, that gconf related things are not at all required for pidgin.
