Description Aljoscha Vollmerhaus 2011-07-06 14:13:05 UTC
Since the upgrade to xorg-server 1.10.2, i get seemingly random segfaults - at least i was not able to spot a pattern. I´ll attach the Xorg.log.

Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce

Do you use compositing? If yes, does switching between classic and gallium with eselect mesa, or disabling compositing altogether make a difference?
Comment 3 Aljoscha Vollmerhaus 2011-07-10 13:09:03 UTC
This is what my mesa settings currently look like:

ld50@nettop ~ $ sudo eselect mesa list
64bit i915 (Intel 915, 945)
64bit i965 (Intel 965, G/Q3x, G/Q4x)
64bit r300 (Radeon R300-R500)
  [1] classic
  [2] gallium *
64bit r600 (Radeon R600-R700, Evergreen, Northern Islands)
  [1] classic *
  [2] gallium
64bit sw (Software renderer)
  [1] classic
  [2] gallium *
32bit i915 (Intel 915, 945)
  [1] classic *
  [2] gallium
32bit i965 (Intel 965, G/Q3x, G/Q4x)
  [1] classic *
  [2] gallium
32bit r300 (Radeon R300-R500)
  [1] classic
  [2] gallium *
32bit r600 (Radeon R600-R700, Evergreen, Northern Islands)
  [1] classic *
  [2] gallium
32bit sw (Software renderer)
  [1] classic
  [2] gallium *

I´ll try switching 64bit r300 from gallium to classic...

Okay, segfaults keep happening even with classic.

I´ll attach the new log, I´m not an expert with the X server so I´m not sure whether it really differs from the one with gallium.

new log file, this time using classic instead of gallium
Comment 6 Stefan Richter 2011-07-10 22:07:00 UTC
I get total lock-ups of the machine recently which I first attributed to kernel 3.0-rc*. But reverting back to 2.6.39.1, the same happens, coincident with de-iconifying windows or scrolling in windows. Also see bug 370305, which is a 1.10.2 bug that can be triggered in multiple ways. I'll try 1.10.3 and see how it goes.
Comment 7 Aljoscha Vollmerhaus 2011-07-13 12:47:11 UTC
Okay, it seems like I´m able to reproduce, at least most of the time.

I´m using a dual-monitor setup, 2 screens at 1680x1050.

It seems like the bug can be triggered by updating large parts of both screens.

When I start Libreoffice on one screen and open a pdf in Evince on the other, both maximized, large portions of the screens have to be redrawn. This almost always triggers the bug.

Tried with both gallium and classic.

Sometimes the server restarts automatically, sometimes it just hangs.
Comment 8 Stefan Richter 2011-07-13 18:40:49 UTC
The random system lockups that I experienced at some GUI operations with xorg-server-1.10.2 do no longer happen for me with xorg-server-1.10.3. (This is after three days usage of 1.10.3 with same applications and same kernel as under 1.10.2. The latter used to crash about twice per day if not even more frequently.)
Comment 9 Aljoscha Vollmerhaus 2011-07-16 17:05:06 UTC
Updated to 1.10.3, still segfaulting.
Comment 10 Aljoscha Vollmerhaus 2011-07-28 21:29:41 UTC
Any news on this? maybe somebody can try to reproduce? I´m almost unable to use the affected machine, getting X segfaults every day, some times 3 to 5 times in a row.
Comment 11 Stefan Richter 2011-08-01 06:58:26 UTC
Since 2011-07-10 when I updated to xorg-server-1.10.3, X crashed (only) a single time here. There was no log message besides "kdm[6384]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly". This was during start or exit of an Xv client, dc1394_multiview from libdc1394. I have got radeon on an AMD/ATI HD 3200 here, and a kernel between 3.0-rc7 and 3.0.

In other words, 1.10.3 is not 100.0 % stable for me either, but it is a huge difference to 1.10.2 which crashed multiple times daily.
Comment 12 Aljoscha Vollmerhaus 2011-10-10 20:48:28 UTC
okay, i upgraded to 1.10.4 - the problem vanished.
