Here are two new docs for sparc, a FAQ and a Netboot-HOWTO to accompany the new experimental netboot images. Attachments coming right up.
Created attachment 23159 [details] SPARC FAQ
Created attachment 23160 [details] Netboot HOWTO for SPARC Describes how to setup a server to netboot a SPARC computer
Reviewing this. A reminder to myself: <SwifT> spyderous: Weeve: about netboot, be sure there are no duplicate intel in it with diskless-howto.xml#doc_chap4
Lots of good stuff here, and certainly good to have collected in one spot. I can tell you first hand that on (some) serial consoles, power-off also is like Stop+A, which was not what I wanted at the time.
Also, if the netboot is better and more elaborate than the information in the diskless howto, keep it in the netboot and fix the diskless howto. It's a two-edged situation.
I just briefly looked over the diskless guide. The only part that currently overlaps are one or two steps describing how to setup tftp-hpa. In the future, we could look into adding additional instructions to the Diskless Guide in relation to SPARC and SPARC64. SPARC64 has the ability to use DHCP as well as rarpd for address acquisition at boot time, but that information is not currently included in this document. Spyderous, If we wanted to add the DHCP for SPARC64 section into the document, would that effect any work you've done so far or your estimated completion date?
I won't be touching anything for at least 2 days, as I take the GRE tomorrow. You're talking about updating the diskless howto, right? All this "the document" is a little confusing since we've got a few here.
Sorry, "this document" is the netboot-howto attached to this case. Good luck on the GRE, and I'll probably have a revision up in a day or two.
Some boxes seen to need boot net-tpe rather than boot net. May be worth a comment somewhere?
Thanks Ciaran. BTW, sorry progress has been slow on this, all my computers seem to be dying. I should be up and running on one of them again as soon as a new PSU comes in.
What is the status of these and what can we do to absolutely positively make sure these get out for the 2004.0 release?
Tell me when your release is.
<ciaranm> spyderous: zhen says the 23rd
any update?
I have been actively working on this whenever I've had time but they're both quite long. I'll be dropping all other Gentoo things until this is done, hopefully today or so.
Thanks spyderous, you rock :)
What's the good word here?
Can someone please comment on the status of this? I don't mean to be pushy but this has been open for some time.
My work on it continues. I was on vacation last week. If I don't get this done in the next few days I'll throw back to docs and let the sparc team claim victory over me.
I give up. The time just hasn't materialized like I thought it would. Someone else please do this.
I've altered the documentation policy to be able to commit these files without further reviewing. We'll see if we get bugreports :)
How does this differ from how the documents would have been treated previously?
I'm currently working on xml-ifying the the two files. Just a heads up in case someone gets bored and decides to tackle them.
Todd, I'm reassigning to you. Just give us a call when you're finished. Jason: previously the docs would've had to be reviewed by a different developer to allow for higher QA, making the development a bit slower.
Created attachment 28773 [details] XML version of netboot-howto.
Created attachment 28774 [details] XML version of the sparc FAQ I'll commit both of these once i've double checked the output of the XML provided by todd. (it validates, I just want to confirm the Layout is smooth.)
Colin, you rock!
Created attachment 28914 [details] new netboot with some fixes.
Created attachment 28915 [details] more fixors
I'll commit those on req of Weeve
Committed to CVS. Linked to the main index page as well. The documents will show up on the following urls: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-faq.xml http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-netboot-howto.xml
