Description Benjamin Börngen-Schmidt 2011-06-13 23:14:40 UTC
I have IPv6 enabled on my Server and also have an IPv6 address assigned by my provider.
Whenever I reboot my system the apache2 processes are zombies and netstat -tulpen shows that apache2 has been binded to [::]:80 and [::]:443

tcp6       0      0 :::80                 :::*                    LISTEN      0          4278       21282/apache2
tcp6       0      0 :::443               :::*                    LISTEN      0          4278       21282/apache2

in vhost.d I have a special config file where I tell apache on which ports it should listen with:
Listen 80
Listen 443

As far as I understood http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/bind.html it should be possible to handle IPv4 connections via the IPv6 socket, which would mean that the above settings are fine and Apache should just work fine.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge system with IPv6 use flag
2. set Listen 80
3. reboot
Actual Results:
Apache processes are zombies
Service is not reachable.

Expected Results:
Reachable Service

Stopping Apache2, Killing all processes and starting Apache2 again seems to fix the problem but then the CPU load for request is really high! Always at 100%, before it was around 20%.

Even setting Listen to <IPv4/IPv6>:80 does not solve the Problem and on reboot Apache starts with zombie processes.

Benjamin, thank you for report. Could you test, is this issue still present in 2.2.20?
Comment 2 Peter Volkov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-09-15 08:36:57 UTC
Also what do you mean by zombies? Readink link you've provided I'm not sure we need to provide such option by default as linux can cope with really large number of sockets and personally I don't see the reason to enable this option by default. If you wish you may try to enable that ./configure switch localy by putting EXTRA_ECONF="--disable-v4-mapped" into /etc/portage/env/www-servers/apache .

That said I need more information from you to debug this problem further and in addition to question to comment 1 tell me please, do you have parallel startup enabled? What network configuration do you have? Closing as NEEDINFO for now.
