Description Max Hacking 2011-06-09 14:20:47 UTC
app-emulation/xen-tools-4.1.0 is unable to start any domains due to the following error....

libxl: error: libxl_device.c:476:libxl__wait_for_device_model Device Model not ready
xl: fatal error: libxl_create.c:535, rc=-1: libxl__confirm_device_model_startup

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install xen-tools-4.1.0
2. Attempt to create a domain using "xl create"
3. Watch in awe as it fails every time
Actual Results:
libxl: error: libxl_device.c:476:libxl__wait_for_device_model Device Model not ready
xl: fatal error: libxl_create.c:535, rc=-1: libxl__confirm_device_model_startup

Expected Results:
Domain should start correctly

This is a serious problem now as xen-tools-4.0.1 has been removed from portage and thus Xen cannot be used on a new installation. Please reinstate xen 4.0.x packages.

Sorry about the truncated emerge --info output. It took some time to get the build-server / portage repository back online and without it that was all it produced....

Comment 3 Ian Delaney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-08-09 10:46:20 UTC
Wondering whether you attempted starting the vm with xm or xl.
The error cites libxl which is inconclusive.

This system running xen & xen-tools-4.1.0 can start vms at will, only with xm.
Cannot replicate this error.

gentoo64 grub # dmesg | grep libxl
gentoo64 grub #

Coulf find no citing of libxl_device.c in /var/log/libvirt//libxl/libxl.log not in xen logs.

What was the selected method of invoking the vm?

Either - both produced the same result IIRC.

I am working on a Slotted ebuild and an eselect module allowing the side-by-side installation of 4.1.x and 4.0.x which will make testing much easier. When I've finished this I'll post it in my overlay and update this bug report with more info.
Comment 5 Ian Delaney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-09-02 05:33:16 UTC
same, except hangs. Doesn't create any selected vms
Comment 6 Ian Delaney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-09-08 07:58:24 UTC
I discovered that there is this

gentoo64 files # ls -ld /etc/xen/xl.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 272 Sep 8 01:53 /etc/xen/xl.conf

edit it and uncomment its three entries.retry
I wull see to having this done on install
