Description Simon Gao 2011-06-08 02:48:32 UTC
After recent updates and removing hal package, I can't log into KDE 4.6.3/4.6.2 anymore. The splash window hung before the big K icon flashes.

I followed the 4.4 to 4.6 upgrade doc, but no avail. It's strange that remote KDE desktop login via NX worked fine. Just in front of the machines that failed.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install recent updates
2. Upgrade to 4.6.2 or 4.6.3
3. Try log into KDE after reboot
Actual Results:
Login splash window hung before big K icon shows up.

Expected Results:
Able to log into KDE 4.6.2/4.6.3 after replacing hal.

The upgrade guide mentions a login problem, at the end of the doc:

====
No login possible, hangs at splash screen (bug 365637)

If you have been playing with unstable Gnome stuff (naughty!) you may encounter a so-far unexplained incompatibility. Logging in to KDE fails as soon as net-libs/glib-networking is installed. Unmerge that package and you should be fine.
====

Does this work?

If not, your ~/.xsession-errors (from the login-failing user) would be interesting.

Glib-networking is not installed.
Comment 4 Simon Gao 2011-06-09 04:53:16 UTC
Just did a new installation using stage3 with kdebase-meta. Same problem. Can't log into KDE.
Comment 5 Jared B. 2011-06-19 16:02:10 UTC
I had (well, still have) the problem that's described here as well, and in my case it turned out to be related to desktop effects. My system *was* letting me login, but as soon as the desktop effects stuff started up, everything on the screen would freeze except for my mouse, giving the impression that X or KDE itself froze.

Temporarily disabling desktop effects with ctrl-alt-f12 'fixed' the problem; as soon as I did that my normal desktop session appeared. Re-enabling effects caused the screen to freeze again. I've since had to permanently disable effects in order to use my system, and have yet to figure out how to properly fix it.

Can you try this and see if it's the same problem?
Comment 6 Simon Gao 2011-06-20 16:58:12 UTC
Another user reported the same problem. He found the latest stable NVIDIA driver (270 series) was the cause for his problem. Downgrading to 260.19.36 fixed his problem.

It's very likely the NVIDIA driver caused problem since I remember the problem started shortly after upgrading NVIDIA driver and restarting the machine.

I reinstalled my machine with stage3 6/14 build and it worked fine now, though I have not enabled composite yet.

For me nvidia-drivers 270/275 seems to be the culprit. I moved from nvidia-drivers to nouveau and the login problem is gone now.

Very possible. I experienced the very same problem after upgrading NVIDIA driver from 269 to 270.x.x with Sabayon 5.5. This is a very nasty bug.

However, after installing from latest stage3 from scratch, I don't have the problem with 270.41.06.

Same here, without desktop effects login is fine. Switching on desktop effects freezes the screen.

Most desktop effects can be used with composite "XRender".

I am having this same problem with kde 4.6.3 and nvidia 270.41.06/270.41.19

I tried to simply downgrade to 260.19.44, but I had a newer xorg-server that 260.X does not support. I am now downgrading both xorg-server and nvidia-drivers and will post results later.
Comment 12 Rick Warner 2011-07-20 14:36:02 UTC
Downgrading both xorg-server and nvidia-drivers resolved the problem.

I have a GeForce 7300 card in this system, and I found on nvidia's forum that this is a bug in the 270+ drivers with 7300/7400 cards. Here is a link to the thread: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=160115

Just a quick tip not solution for those who can not log into kdm: eselect opengl xorg-x11 instead of nvidia.
Comment 14 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2011-09-03 19:41:20 UTC
The OpenGL etc detection and initialization code was updated a lot with kde-4.7.0. Could you please try that and give us feedback?

kde-4.7.0 won't be stabilized as ".0" version, but many of us have been running it for a month already and it works imho very well.
Comment 15 Holger Ackermann 2011-09-17 20:47:19 UTC
Updated to KDE-4.7.1 today while using x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-275.09.07. I tried to switch from XRender to OpenGL which failed until I switched off "activate direct rendering" (German: "Direktes Rendern aktivieren"). Still not everything is working as it should (or is it my video card?). The login problem seems to be gone for settings accepted by systemsettings, at least composite OpenGL can be switched on again.

Not really our problem then...

Matter of taste... some people would say, lets wait until the fix goes into stable. Anyway.
