Description Chris Coleman 2011-06-01 21:13:07 UTC
The udev rule is triggered before /usr is mounted. The udev rule invokes /usr/sbin/alsactl which doesn't exist yet.

Loading Linux 2.6.39-gentoo ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...
INIT: version 2.88 booting

   OpenRC 0.8.2 is starting up Gentoo Linux (x86_64)

 * /proc is already mounted, skipping
 * /dev is already mounted
 * Starting udevd ...                                                 [ ok ]
 * Populating /dev with existing devices through uevents ...          [ ok ]
 * Waiting for uevents to be processed ...
udevd[338]: exec of program '/usr/sbin/alsactl restore 0' failed

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. have /usr on a separate partition
2. emerge =media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.24.2-r1
3. reboot

Comment 2 Dmitry Balakshin 2011-06-09 08:36:43 UTC
I have exact the same problem too. On a new machine I've made a separate /usr and /var and got the same message.

I don't think it is the ALSA problem, though. udev failed to start bluetooth daemon also.

And one more thought. alsactl will try to read /var/lib/alsa/asound.state. In my case, when I have /var separate, I still have troubles restoring driver state.
Comment 3 Chris Coleman 2011-06-09 22:25:58 UTC
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/separate-usr-is-broken

I found that article very informative. You're right, Dmitry, this isn't really an ALSA problem. Having a separate /usr partition affects many other applications that use udev. I have already reported essentially the same bug for VirtualBox (bug #368215).

I think the best resolution, for me anyway, is to just stop having /usr on a separate partition.
Comment 4 Wang Bin 2011-06-10 01:57:34 UTC
I have the same problem, I installed my system followed the gentoo lvm2 installation document(http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/lvm2.xml), if this problem is considered not need to fix, I suggest update the document to warn user about this problem.
Comment 5 Wirt Wolff 2011-06-10 04:51:58 UTC
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/separate-usr-is-broken convinces me too that this is not udev bug, but instead a more fundamental system change.

Perhaps this bug should be closed and forwarded to a new Documentation assigned bug to collect and fix docs that suggest using separate /usr (and /var and tbd.)

Thanks for suggesting that. I wouldn't have thought of it.

This is now bug #372317.
