Created attachment 274901 [details] stack trace from the crash wizard Today I've made another attempt to upgrade kde. I already tried 4.6.0, and had several problems with it which made it absolutely unusable. I thought 4.6.2 may be better. But no :-( As in 4.6.0, kwin segfauts very often. I suppose it restarts automatically, because after a segfault it is possible to continue. I only have to close multiple windows suggesting to send a bug report about all these segfaults to kde developers. However, now also the panel has disappeared, and it is not comfortable to continue this kde session. I removed my old .kde4/ (from 4.5.5) to start from the default configuration. After that, I configured the panel to auto-hide (as I always do). It hided; after I moved the mouse down to get it back, kwin crashed. I tried to switch to another virtual scree, and it crashed again. I really regret that 4.5.5 (which worked well) has been removed. 4.6.* are as far from stable as *.0. I have Intel Pineview integrated graphics. eeepc ~ # emerge --info Portage 2.2.0_alpha37 (default/linux/x86/10.0/desktop/kde, gcc-4.5.2, glibc-2.13-r2, 2.6.38-gentoo-r3 i686) Looks like a compositing/X11 intel driver problem... Anything useful in /var/lib/Xorg.0.log or ~/.xsession-errors ???
I've disabled all desktop effects, and now have a usable system which does not bombard me by windows saying that kwin has segfaulted. So, I suppose, I'll close this bug. But the fact remains that kde-4.5.5 worked fine with lots of desktop effects enabled, and some of them were quite nice (I rather liked the cube rotation effect when switching virtual desktops). Looks like a serious regression in kde.
