Description Jacob Carson 2011-05-16 21:04:23 UTC
While using KDE on my laptop, I would be sent back to the login screen whenever a text field tried to display a drop-down menu for showing recently entered values or for listing possible values.

This behavior would also occur at some occasions when I wasn't using text fields; however, these events were harder to predict. By contrast, the return-to-login screen would always happen when a text field tried to use its autocomplete feature.

I installed Xfce4 on my laptop, and have not yet encountered this problem again, so I think it's some problem in KDE.

All of my X11 and KDE software was installed from the stable branch of amd64, not the testing branch.

Other people have reported similar problems in these threads in the Gentoo forums:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-847069-start-0-postdays-0-postorder-asc.html
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-848018.html
However, there didn't seem to be any bug reports in the system.

I have not checked to see if I am actually logged out of the system, or if X itself is restarting, or things like that, because I don't know how. If you want more documentation or experiments, please let me know.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open an application that contains a text field which has an autocomplete feature which will drop-down a list of items (i.e. Mozilla Firefox).
2. Start typing in a text field until the autocomplete feature drops down a list of items (i.e. Firefox's Open Location text field).
Actual Results:
The list will display for less than one second, after which the screen will briefly go black, after which the login screen will be displayed.

Expected Results:
Display the list without returning to the login screen.

I don't recall having this problem with KDE 4.6.2 on my desktop computer; however, since my motherboard broke, can't test it for sure. One of the other people on the forum mentioned that his computer uses an AMD processor, which my laptop uses; my desktop used an Intel processor. It still used the amd64 arch since it was a 64-bit processor, but there could be some problem with KDE and AMD processors.

WARNING: Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXDestroyPixmap" when GLX 1.3 is not supported! This is an application bug!

^ this seems to be https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=209877

As this is the only really unusual line in the log, I'd suspect it might be of relevance...

- Are there any interesting messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log ??
- What is your X server version?
- What graphics card do you have?
- What is your Qt4 version ?
- Are you using Desktop Effects / Compositing?
- Do you have some widget in your Plasma desktop which could be using OpenGL ?
- What is your "Mesa" version ?
- Please attach your xorg.conf

You could also try to get a core dump of the crashing X server and paste the backtrace, see http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml

Sorry, X11 problems are notoriously hard to debug...
