Description Nikos Chantziaras 2011-05-16 17:53:34 UTC
firefox and xulrunner got updated today to 4.0.1-r1 and 2.0.1-r1 respectively. Now the spell checker lists too many dictionaries. I only used three: English, German and Greek. Now it lists 12 (!). Some are listed twice. If I remove the add-ons that provide the three original dicts, it still lists too many (9), containing every possible dialect of English. This is very annoying for people who switch between dictionaries very often due to writing multilingual texts (Greek/German with lots of English terms in my case).

There doesn't seem to be a USE flag that controls this either. What is needed is to either get rid of all the English dialects and leave only one (English US in my case), or tell Firefox to only use my add-ons for spell checking.

(Thunderbird has the same problem, but I guess that should be a different bug report?)

Reproducible: Always

myspell-en provides most of the en-* dictionaries for english, as gentoo always uses systems libs we have made mozilla products use system dictionaries. We are currently working with upstream to include the updated patch for hunspell dictionary detection. Just for the record we have used myspell dictionaries from the system since early firefox-3.0.x
Comment 2 Nikos Chantziaras 2011-05-16 19:26:05 UTC
This bug isn't invalid, because I can't get rid of the dictionaries.

Since there was no reply, I guess I'll open it again myself. Sorry for the noise.

If your not happy with the myspell dictionaries you can speak to that herd about it, or you are free to remove the system hunspell detection in your own overlay. I can not accomidate everyone. If you use openoffice or libreoffice you would experience the same issue. This bug is very invalid and wont be fixed from the mozilla side of things.
Comment 5 Nikos Chantziaras 2011-05-18 03:34:37 UTC
So you're saying there is no provision in the mozilla build system that allows one to disable hunspell support? (And therefore allow a USE flag that controls it.)

Your always welcome to use firefox-bin and thunderbird-bin
